SXSW and the bitter pill...
"Eating Levi" didn't get in to SXSW.
There, I typed it. Now the healing can begin.
We received notice via E-mail and some really nice phone calls from friends and colleagues.
So...why no freak out? Why no chest beating? Or damning of the "unfairness" of the process?
Matt Dentler (and some insider pals) have always hinted to the fact that "Eating Levi" was always too short to submit as a feature (we are at 52 minutes, SXSW doesn't like to program features less than 70 minutes).
So what's next?
We had put most of our eggs in the SXSW basket, so we'll now start to submit to other fests. We'll also probably accept the invite to the Spanish fest.
We will also plan an Austin showing and are working with someone to show the film in NYC.
Don't cry for me: We have the opposite problem than the one I thought we would have. I thought we would play the hell out of the festival circuit and make no money. Presently, once this other license is sold to the Yes Network, we will be even on the film. We have also retained all DVD rights and will begin selling them as soon as we print them up.
You're avoiding the question. What's next?
Well, we are in talks about a new project and have lined up some preliminary dollars. Hopefully, we'll take the proceeds from DVD and start shooting -- Tobias! Put on the Viking helmet and burn down the neighbor's house. But more about that later.
